On farms that supply caged eggs, hens defecate in the same barren cages they lay eggs in. Mother hens are crammed for nearly their entire lives in cages so small and cruel they are illegal in a dozen states and in numerous countries around the world.
Nearly every other leading supermarket group in the U.S. has an updated commitment and timeline to shift to selling cage-free eggs—but not The Giant Company. While years ago Ahold, parent company of The Giant Company, committed to selling only cage-free eggs by 2025, it has failed to make significant progress on the issue and today has no updated policy or strategy in place—putting The Giant Company’s customers at higher risk and leaving animals in extreme misery.
We are calling on The Giant Company to catch up with other leading retailers in the U.S. and put an updated commitment and timeline in place to:
1) Shift all private label eggs to cage-free;
2) Agree to put signage in its egg aisles making clear which eggs come from caged hens;
3) Reduce the number of caged egg SKUs to just one;
4) Similarly, set an updated timeline for all of the fresh pork the company sources to come from producers that use group-housed sows and not gestation crates (another critical animal welfare failure of The Giant Company)
It’s time for The Giant Company to catch up with other grocery chains and with its own promises on this critical food safety and animal welfare issue.

Over a dozen scientific studies have found that caged egg farms have dramatically higher rates of salmonella contamination. The European Food Safety Authority conducted the largest study ever on the issue, analyzing data from five thousand farms. It found that caged egg farms are 25 times more likely to be contaminated with key salmonella strains. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17)
There are numerous reasons why packing hens in cages causes food safety risks. Research by the United States Department of Agriculture shows the stress of cage confinement makes hens more vulnerable to disease. Cages are also hard to clean and disinfect, leading to “a larger volume of contaminated fecal material and dust. (18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23)
Just like dogs and cats, chickens are smart, intelligent individuals that feel pleasure and pain. Packing an animal for nearly her entire life in a cage so small she can barely turn around is simply wrong, (24)
Battery cages are so cruel they have been banned in dozens of countries around the world. Every mainstream animal protection organization around the world condemns battery cages as cruel and inhumane. (25, 26, 27)
